Updating the system software of a PS5 console ensures that your console has the latest features, performance improvements, and security patches. Here’s how to do it:
Method 1: Update via the Internet (Automatic)
- Connect to the Internet
Ensure your PS5 is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. - Check for Updates Manually (Optional)
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software and then choose Update Using Internet.
- If an update is available, it will download and install automatically.
- Enable Automatic Updates (Optional)
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.

Method 2: Update via USB Drive (Manual)

- Prepare a USB Drive

- Format the drive to FAT32 or exFAT.
- Download the Update File
- Visit the official PlayStation website: PS5 System Software Updates.
- Download the latest system software update file.
It will be named something likePS5UPDATE.PUP
.
- Create the Update Folder on the USB
- On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5.
- Inside the PS5 folder, create another folder named UPDATE.
- Place the downloaded file (
PS5UPDATE.PUP
) into the UPDATE folder.
- Install the Update
- Connect the USB drive to your PS5.
- Start the console in Safe Mode:
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds).
- In Safe Mode, select Update System Software > Update from USB Drive.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Method 3: Update via Game Disc
Some game discs include system updates.
- Insert the game disc into the PS5.
- If the system software update is required, you’ll be prompted to install it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
