Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console. This process is often referred to as a “factory” reset, or “hard” reset.

Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 can help resolve serious issues like software corruption, boot failures, or performance problems. Here’s how to safely reinstall the system software on your PS5 console.

Important Notes Before Starting

  1. Backup Your Data
    • Reinstalling system software will delete all data on your PS5.
    • Backup your saved data to the cloud (if you have PlayStation Plus) or an external USB storage device.
  2. Prepare a USB Drive
    • Use a USB drive with at least 1GB of free space.
    • Format the USB drive to FAT32 or exFAT.

Steps to Reinstall the System Software

1: Download the Reinstallation File

  1. Visit the official PlayStation website:
    PS5 System Software Updates.
  2. Download the Reinstallation File (larger than the regular update file).
It will be named something like PS5UPDATE.PUP.

2: Prepare the USB Drive

  1. Create a folder named PS5 on the USB drive.
  2. Inside the PS5 folder, create another folder named UPDATE.
  3. Place the downloaded file (PS5UPDATE.PUP) in the UPDATE folder.

3: Start PS5 in Safe Mode

  1. Turn off your PS5 completely (hold the power button until the console shuts down).
  2. Boot into Safe Mode:
    • Press and hold the power button until you hear a second beep (about 7 seconds).
  3. Connect your DualSense controller to the console via a USB cable and press the PS button.

4: Reinstall the System Software

  1. In Safe Mode, select Option 7: Reinstall System Software.
  2. Insert the USB drive with the reinstallation file.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

After the Reinstallation

  1. Sign In to Your PSN Account
    • Re-link your PlayStation Network account and download any saved data or games.
  2. Reinstall Games and Apps
    • Redownload your games or restore them from an external hard drive.
  3. Restore Saved Data
    • Use your backup to restore your saved progress (if backed up earlier).

Troubleshooting

  • If the PS5 cannot find the file:
    • Ensure the USB drive is formatted correctly (FAT32 or exFAT).
    • Double-check that the file is in the correct folder structure: /PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
    • Verify that you downloaded the Reinstallation File, not the standard update file.
  • If the process fails repeatedly, contact PlayStation Support for further assistance.

By following these steps, you can successfully reinstall the system software and restore your PS5 to its default state. Let me know if you encounter any issues!
